CAN WE DESING OUR SMILE?
DOES A BEAUTIFUL SMILE MEAN WHITE TEETH?
Is designing a smile the same as designing a dress or a house?
Iwona Cieplińska: Basically, yes, because designing is actually planning and putting into paper your own visions, ideas and details which we like. We achieve it with the help of designers or architects who add their knowledge, modern trends and materials to our ideas so that we can come over.
How can we design a smile?
Due to advanced technologies we can desing our smile in an absolutely predictable way before we even start any procedures. Patients are able to see themselves with a new smile in a mirror, in photos on a film providing facial expression.
Are white teeth a condition to have a beautiful smile?
Against to a general opinion – no. A beautiful smile is a harmony between a shape of teeth, their setting in proportion to feature and facial expression and a colour. We never look only t teeth, we see them surrounded by a mouth and against the skin. Among people of dark race teeth are usually quite dark, but we perceive them as white. A mismatched lipstick colour to your mouth also influences on a colour of teeth perception. Loved by ladies red colour very often does not add glow to our smile, quite the contrary, it makes our teeth look more yellow .
HOW DOES A SMILE DESIGN LOOK IN PRECTICE? WHAT DO WE START WITH?
W begin with a deep analysis of teeth and their surrounding – features. We analyze the fillings state , which should be completely invisible, discoloration of teeth structure, uniformity of colour, mutual proportions and teeth setting. We analise the so called “smile curved line” – a line of upper anterior teeth. It should be parallel to a lower lip in a light smile. A tooth abrasion provides a so called negative line and despite of a beautiful colour ages us significantly. We analise the correspondence of the centre line of face and teeth and the so called upper lip dynamics that is its move during speaking and smiling. A gum smile, when we show whole teeth crowns and gums, is a big challenge for a dentist. Here we can use some aesthetic medicine procedures. Due to model scanning and milling we prepare for a patient thin acrylic onlays which count a colour change, shape change, size change and teeth setting which we match in mouth and we take photos. A patient can wear them for a few days to see themselves with a new smile and to see their environment reaction. We like working with patients’ photos because we judge our look in a photo completely different to our look in a mirror.
DO PATENTS ACCEPT THE CHANGES?
Not always. Sometimes the changes are too shocking for a patient and often dentists want to show that patient’s expectations go off course. Despite pressure of having a beautiful smile we want to embalm naturalness.
WHAT METHODS ARE USED TO MAKE OUR SMILE BETTER?
In all our procedures we try to apply the so called minimally invasive dentistry. We usually use methods that require big interference in teeth issues, we apply porcelain and composite veneers, gentle whitening, teeth setting correction with transparent onlays. Where clinically appropriate, we apply porcelain crowns and other advanced procedures. We try not to fight with time and not to hurt the patient by using advanced procedured too early.
